How to Apply

To apply, students must submit an essay explaining how NPYB has shaped their lives and how they’ve contributed to the league. All submissions are reviewed anonymously by a panel of community members who are not on the board. The three selected recipients will be notified with details on how and when scholarships will be distributed.

Essays must be submitted by April 30 of the current school year. Please send entries to an NPYB board member or email them to teddy.deas23@yahoo.com.

Each year, NPYB awards three $500 scholarships to graduating high school seniors who have been positively impacted by the league and who demonstrate heart, leadership, dedication, and character, just like Marcus did.

The scholarship helps one deserving player pursue higher education or whatever else their dream may be.

Marcus Freeman was more than a quarterback.

He was a role model, a standout student, and a young man whose presence lifted everyone around him.

A proud North Port High School student and beloved community member, Marcus tragically died in a traffic crash on March 15, 2011, but his memory continues to shape lives.

The Marcus Freeman Memorial Scholarship was created to carry forward his legacy and inspire future generations to put their best foot forward no matter where life takes them.

"In the end, it's the extra effort that separates a winner from second place. But winning takes a lot more than that, too. It starts with complete command of the fundamentals. The it takes desire, determination, discipline, and self-sacrifice. And finally, it takes a great deal of love, fairness and respect for your fellow sport. Put all of these together, and even if you don't win, how can you lose?"
